Ride the Polar Express in Bryson City
For many families, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad’s Polar Express Train Ride is the reason they come to Bryson City during the holidays.
The 1¼-hour round-trip experience departs from the Bryson City Depot and brings the familiar story to life with music, hot chocolate, a sweet treat and a visit from Santa. Children receive a silver sleigh bell, just like the first gift of Christmas in the story.
The railroad has several classes of service, and the seating arrangements and included souvenirs vary. Some sections require purchasing all the seats at a table, while coach tickets are sold individually. Read the details before choosing so you know exactly what works for your family.

See Bryson City’s Nights of Lights
Bryson City leans all the way into Christmas. Downtown streets glow with holiday lights, local shops feel festive and seasonal activities make it easy to fill an evening before or after the train.
The town’s holiday lineup includes downtown light displays, a Christmas tree lighting, letters to Santa, hot cocoa and cookies, hayrides under the lights at Darnell Farms and outdoor ice skating at The Yard. Exact operating dates and times vary, so check the current Bryson City holiday calendar before your trip.
The fun part is that you do not need a complicated plan. Walk through downtown, let the kids look at the lights, stop for something warm and browse a few local shops. Christmas does not have to be a race from one reserved activity to the next.
Drive Through the Smoky Mountain Christmas Light Spectacular
If your family loves Christmas lights, add the Smoky Mountain Christmas Light Spectacular to your list. This drive-through display lets you enjoy the lights from the warmth of your own vehicle—which is especially nice if the weather is cold or you have little ones who are done walking for the day.
The display is part of Bryson City’s 2026 holiday celebration. Check the official event page for current dates, hours and admission details before you go.
This can be an easy activity for arrival night because it does not require a long hike, special clothing or convincing tired children to smile for one more picture.
Walk Through Dillsboro Lights & Luminaries
Dillsboro’s Lights & Luminaries is the kind of small-town Christmas event that feels like it belongs in a holiday movie.
For 2026, the event is scheduled for December 4–5 and December 11–12. Downtown Dillsboro will be illuminated by approximately 2,500 luminaries and twinkling white lights. Shops stay open, carolers and live music add to the atmosphere, and visitors can enjoy holiday treats, hot cider, cocoa and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
The event is free, and a shuttle is traditionally offered from Monteith Park. Verify current shuttle and event details before leaving the cabin.
Wear warm layers and comfortable shoes. The town is small, but you will want to wander instead of rushing through it.
Watch the Sylva Christmas Parade
Sylva’s Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sunday, December 6, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. along Main Street. The event is free and is a fun way to combine a traditional Christmas parade with shopping or a meal in downtown Sylva.
Arrive early enough to park and find a viewing spot. Afterward, stay in town for dinner or take the short drive to Dillsboro if your dates line up with Lights & Luminaries.
Pairing nearby activities is one of the easiest ways to make the most of a mountain weekend without spending all day in the car.
Look for Holiday Fun in Cherokee
Cherokee has offered seasonal events including the Enchanted Island of Lights and a Christmas parade in previous years. At the time this guide was written, complete 2026 dates were not yet posted on the official calendar.
That does not mean you should skip Cherokee. Check the official event calendar closer to your visit for newly announced lights, markets, parades or cultural activities. You can also enjoy shopping, dining and a drive through the Oconaluftee area while you are nearby.
We would rather tell you that a date is not confirmed than send you across town for an event that is not happening. Always double-check seasonal listings before making them the centerpiece of your day.
Shop Small for Christmas Gifts
One of our favorite parts of a mountain holiday trip is finding gifts you would never see in a big-box store.
Bryson City, Sylva and Dillsboro have locally owned shops, galleries and specialty stores where you can find artwork, pottery, clothing, books, treats and mountain-made gifts. Cherokee is also a meaningful place to look for authentic Native art, but pay attention to where and from whom you are purchasing.
Leave a little room in the car. “We are only looking” has a way of turning into several shopping bags around here.
Build a Simple Two-Night Christmas Itinerary
You do not need to fit everything into one trip. Here is an easy starting point:
