You do not have to entertain everyone you have ever met. You only need to pack the people you actually want to spend a few days with.
Keep the Traditions You Love
Renting a cabin does not mean giving up Christmas morning, your favorite meal or matching pajamas. It simply gives those traditions a different backdrop.
Bring a few wrapped gifts, a favorite ornament, holiday pajamas and the ingredients for the meal that matters most to you. Many of our cabins have fully equipped kitchens, so you can cook a full meal—or heat up takeout and call it a holiday. We do not judge.
Just remember that holiday hours can be limited. Grocery stores and restaurants may close early or stay closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Shop before you arrive and confirm restaurant hours directly.
The mountain version of “winging it” can end with crackers and gas-station snacks for dinner. Plan the important food.
Make the Cabin Part of the Experience
One of the biggest mistakes guests make is filling every minute of their trip and forgetting to enjoy the place they booked.

Many of our cabins include robes, slippers, hot tubs, fire pits and porches. Amenities vary by property, so read the listing carefully and choose the cabin that fits the holiday you are imagining.
Lazy Daze is our budget-friendly option and does not have a hot tub, but it offers easy access and a large yard. Our other cabins have their own personalities, views and layouts. If you are not sure which one fits your group, ask us.
Enjoy the Holiday Lights Without Staying in the Middle of the Crowd
Bryson City becomes a Christmas destination during November and December. The Polar Express departs from downtown, holiday lights brighten the streets and seasonal activities bring families into town.
Nearby Dillsboro hosts its beautiful Lights & Luminaries celebration during the first two weekends of December. Sylva has a traditional Christmas parade, and Cherokee may add seasonal events as dates are announced.
Staying in a cabin lets you enjoy the celebration, then leave the activity behind and return to your own space. You can see the lights, shop, eat and take pictures—then put on comfortable clothes and call it a night.
That is our kind of holiday balance.
Winter Is a Different Side of the Smokies
Winter mountain views can be especially beautiful after the leaves have fallen. You may see farther through the trees, waterfalls stand out against the landscape and popular outdoor areas can feel very different from their summer version.

Always check seasonal hours and road closures before leaving the cabin. Some mountain roads and high-elevation areas may close because of snow, ice or seasonal schedules.
A Romantic Holiday Does Not Need a Packed Itinerary
Holiday travel is not only for families with children. Couples can have an especially good time in the mountains during this season.
Pick one festive activity, make a dinner reservation and leave the rest open. Shop for a gift together instead of guessing. Take a drive to see the lights. Bring a bottle of wine, favorite snacks and the movie you watch every December.
Then do absolutely nothing for a while.
Hot Cocoa is especially loved by couples, with a king bed, oversized shower, covered deck and hot tub. Altitude Adjustment offers amazing views, while our two-bedroom cabins work well when two couples want to travel together but still have more space.
The best cabin is not always the biggest one. It is the one that matches how you want to spend the trip.
Bring the Dog Along for the Holiday
For many of us, the dog is part of the family—not a piece of luggage we want to leave behind at Christmas.
Several of our cabins are dog friendly, giving you the option to bring your pup along. Pack their food, medications, leash, waste bags, a familiar bed or blanket and anything they need to settle comfortably in a new place.
Keep in mind that Great Smoky Mountains National Park allows dogs on only two trails: the Oconaluftee River Trail and the Gatlinburg Trail. There are other dog-friendly walks and patios around the area, but winter hours may vary.
Choose activities that work for the whole group, and never leave a dog outside unattended in an unfamiliar mountain environment.
What About Snow?
Let us clear up one of the biggest winter questions: Snow is possible, but it is never guaranteed.
Some guests imagine waking up every December morning to a postcard-perfect blanket of snow. Western North Carolina weather does not work on a movie schedule. You may get snow, rain, sunshine or a little of everything during the same trip.
Watch the forecast, bring appropriate clothing and understand the access information for your specific cabin. Mountain roads can be hilly, curvy, gravel, narrow and dark at night. We strongly recommend arriving before dark, especially on your first visit.
If winter weather is predicted, follow official road guidance and communicate with us. Travel insurance is a smart consideration because weather can affect travel plans.

Polar Express weekends, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s can book early. If you need a specific cabin or exact dates, waiting for a last-minute deal may leave you with fewer choices.
