Plan to arrive during daylight on check-in day.

Getting your bearings is much easier when you can actually see the scenery around you. The drive feels less intimidating, and you'll start your vacation feeling relaxed instead of stressed.

Use Google Maps

In our area, Google Maps tends to be the most reliable navigation option.

Even then, double-check that it hasn't changed your destination to a similar street name before you head out.

A quick glance can save you a lot of unnecessary driving.

Gravel Roads? Turn Off Traction Control

Here's a local tip many visitors have never heard.

If you're driving on a gravel mountain road, turn off your traction control and maintain a steady speed while climbing.

If you stop halfway up a gravel hill, your tires may begin to spin.

As we like to say:

"Spinning ain't winning."

Relax, keep moving, and remember you're in the mountains.

Don't Be Surprised by Nature

You're staying in the Smokies, so expect to share the outdoors with... the outdoors.

You might spot wildlife during your visit, but you're even more likely to encounter harmless mountain nuisances like:

• Stink bugs
